Many years ago when I stayed in Ireland I had over a quarter of an acre planted out with a wide variety of vegetables, complete with polytunnel and my own water supply.
I used no pesticides whatsoever and took the slight losses due to slug damage or whatever came my way… Nothing much as it turned out.
Where I lived, surrounded by rolling hills and fields in North Roscommon, I was living amongst the farming community but it appeared I was the only person growing anything other than grazing pasture for cattle and sheep.
One day my farmer neighbour, whilst feeding his cattle in a field adjacent to my own which was in full growth at the time, commented that I had a wonderful variety of vegetables and ‘mighty’ looking potatoes as I was digging some up.
We got into a conversation which led us down the path of GM crops, which is where I wanted the conversation to go to get an idea of his thoughts on the issue. Knowing he was a religious man I approached the subject from the standpoint that anything that was ‘God’s’ creation shouldn’t be tampered with to which he wholeheartedly agreed.
I went onto say that I knew that one day the GM lobbyists would force Irish farmers to grow, that most traditional of Irish crops, the humble potato.
His answer was that he would never grow GM crops.
I went to tell him that he would have no choice when the Soviet Union of Europe told him to grow them to ensure that he could keep claiming his ‘free’ money in the form of EU Farming Subsidies.
This seemed to leave him a little perplexed as the cogs started turning in his head at the thought of losing all that filthy lucre for the sake of religious conviction. The GM (Green Monster) of greed had taken over.
After pointing out that once GM crops were ploughed into the agricultural food chain that cross contamination would end all organic crop farming I told him that in no uncertain terms that if GM potatoes appeared in his field then I would very quickly burn them to the ground. This seemed to stun him into a silent stupor as he tried to grasp why I would be so violently opposed to what amounts to an alien species of food crop living next door.
He quickly resorted to a few huffs and puffs before wandering off muttering something about sheep…. I thought that quite appropriate!
So the following story from the Irish media that those supposedly in power to protect Irish farming and the environment in general The Environmental Protection Agency have given the ‘Green’ light to Teagasc to conduct the appropriately named ‘field trials’ of GM potatoes.
This is the beginning of the end for Irish farmers who for so long have sucked on the teat of EU bribery and corruption…. I’m sorry, but you’ll receive no sympathy from me. Your so called farming ‘leaders’ have sold you a pack of lies which have been countered on many occasions by concerned people in Ireland and across the world regarding the direction the EU gangsters were taking you all and you took every bribe offered.
This is the death of Irish agricultural and all those who literally feed off it!
R.I.P.
